what
We pretty much finalized the dates and venues for the exhibit. It has been decided that the actual event will occur at 1509 on the Wednesday before First Friday. A small senior show is happening on First Friday so we couldn’t do it then. We also have Thanksgiving break the weekend before this Wednesday so we are worried people will still be in Thanksgiving mood.
A small exhibit with leave behinds will also be left at Gallery 5 starting First Friday and staying up for the remaining month. This way we figure we can really impact people with our main event but also catch any stragglers at Gallery 5 and possibly interest them in our mission.
After we finalized these aspects of the exhbit, we dissolved the group for now and went into our second stage groups. Myself currently being invloved with the exhibit/environment design. We decided to merge the groups for now in order to work together to get the initial plan layed out.
so what
This process has given us experience with setting up meetings and just working with outside people. I learned that if you want to setup an exhibit somewhere, you better contact galleries months before. It was very hard and we were very lucky to find the two venus we did which are both great. It was also interesting to not just work in one group of a project but to finish small jobs and move around to other groups.
now what
It will be good in the future to know how to work with outside individuals, lay out plans with them and explain your vision so they understand. Also to know how to set up dates, working around the groups schedule, the venues schedule and just figuring out what possible day would be best. One interesting problem we had was we thought a better day would have been a week or even two weeks earlier but we said we would rather have more time to work on the project then having a slightly better day. If we promote well enough, the actual date should not be much of a problem.

what
This class we split into groups to get the first part of the project started. The entire scope of the project was tentatively laid out into who would be in what group to do what. I was a part of the venue and date group for the first part. The most obvious venue would be a gallery space and the most obvious gallery would be the 1509 building since we have access to it at all times. I also suggested gallery 5 since it is already extremely popular on first fridays and some of us have connections to Bizhan who could help us out with the space.
We discussed that gallery 5 could possibly hurt us though because while a lot of people could be there, they wouldn’t be there for us. I personally thought that exposing a larger audience to the exhibit would be beneficial however I also see the other side. The only problem with 1509 is that the senior show will be there and we would probably be pushed upstairs.
so what
Working in groups will give us, obviously, exposure to working with other people to get a goal accomplished. Also it is interesting to see many different groups working on small sections of a large project. So it is individuals working with other individuals and then groups working with other groups. Another aspect is that we must plan out a calender so we know what needs to be done by when and it will keep us from wandering around. In the real world, we will be expected to work with tight schedules like this.
now what
In the real world, a lot of design is done at large firms where you will be working with other designers on projects. Even if you free lance, you must work with people who may not be designers but will have input to the creative project. Working with outside non-designers will probably be even more challenging. We will also be expected to evaluate a clients schedule, tell them if it is realistic or not and then form our plan around that final date. All while taking into account for design time, printing, revisions, mailings, and any problems.

what
I presented my idea for the classes final project today. My idea was to setup a community billboard or a free wall for the public to use as it wishes. The idea seemed great in my head and I became pretty pumped about the presentation thinking that the class would really grasp onto it like I had. My nerves started to catch up with me right before class and perhaps that had an affect on how I presented the idea. I feel like I rushed some of the slides and didn’t really articulate some underlying points that might have pushed the idea farther.
Of course the rest of the class also presented their ideas. Some of the projects really felt good to me while others seemed slightly under whelming. While I really wanted my project to be chosen, I was also looking forward to seeing others ideas and being blown away. An important aspect that I think was overlooked was that we have a small time frame and budget so the projects should be crafted to get the most out of those constraints that we could.
so what
The reason for the presentations was to practice public speaking and presenting projects to clients. This was n aspect of the class I was surprised by but found it to be great. While in many of our classes we learn to critique and present our work to each other, we have never really focused on convincing a client of our ideas and the reasons behind them. The group project will allow us to work together with a large group of people with different skill sets for a common project.
now what
A large portion of the professional world will be presenting ideas and proposals to clients. Amazing design won’t get you that far if you can’t talk about your work and explain conceptual reasoning to men in suits. We will now go forward with our group project and will hopefully learn how to deal with each other. I could probably learn something because I often find myself in situations where I like to work alone and I know that the real world is not like this. Even if I am the only designer working in house, I still have to report to people and apply others ideas to the work.
