what

The most exciting thing ever this semester, teacher evaluations. I gave you a good grade though Noah, dont sweat it. After that, Liam went to pick up our signage prints that finally actually got printed and I went to the graphics lab to print some smaller things for the exhibit. Sunday night we met out of class to layout the basic setup such as tables, chairs and lights. On Monday in class we discussed any problems we encountered the night before and anything else we needed. No major problems though, just things like more table clothes and mounting materials.

so what

A good habit that our exhibit design group seems to have fallen into lately is discussing things that have happened since last class or when we were all last together. Its good to review the positive things and any problems with everyone so you know that everyone knows everything.

now what

Always keep in mind that everyone on your team should know everything you do, always keep everyone up to date. You can’t expect things to get fixed or improved if no one else knows about it.

what

I had swine flu.

What a glorious day indeed. Wednesday of the week before my hamster that I have had my entire college career passed away. As a way to avenge his death I guess, I then lost a bunch of money to online poker. The next day I woke up feeling ill and then that afternoon I got a phone call letting me know that my grand father had passed away. Emotionally distraught I rushed to Fredericksburg with my girlfriends car leaving her stranded at a basketball game in Richmond. The funeral was set for Tuesday which I had already made plans with my professors to miss class. However Monday morning I felt absolutely terrible but mostly figured it was stress. By the time Print I rolled around I couldn’t stand to be alive anymore so I went home after making a doctors appointment. At said doctors appointment, I had the delightful news that yes in fact I had swine flu and would not be able to attend my grand fathers funeral since I was so contagious with a 102 fever. This also meant I wasn’t able to go home for Thanksgiving until the fever passed since my mother is currently on chemo and can’t be exposed to anything as she has no immune system left.

so what

Swine flu sucks, be proactive and get the damn shot.

now what

In the future when a highly contagious and prevalent form of the flu is going around the world, I will be proactive and get that damn shot.

what

After drawing out a layout of the floor plan for the exhibit design, we brought it into class to show the rest of the group to make sure no glaring things were missed. Everything checked out fine even though more community partners were added. The signage portion of our group also brought in pretty final layouts. We reviewed them since they needed to be printed soon but apparently missed something obvious that we later found out about after sending them to the printer. The larger posters apparently were never actually that large. They were supposed to be 18”x24” but were designed at 11”x17”.

so what

Going over your own and others work is the only way to catch mistakes before someone else does. Even though we missed it this time, it was at least discovered by the printer before the posters were run. If he had run them it would have cost us money that we really needed to hold on to. Also by bringing in the exhibit layout it reminded the other group to tell us about the new community partners.

now what

Its never a good idea to do work and never have someone else look at it. Your asking for trouble amd mistakes to pop up. When you stare at something you fall into a zone of just approving things. We had discovered something similiar in the press release area, we aren’t copy writers so a lot of our sentences came out weird when someone else read them to us. In the future, its always good to keep in mind that you are falible and will make mistakes so let a coworker catch them before a client does.

11/16

what

After we had tried to draw out a layout for the exhibit, Liam and I decided that we would have to go to the physical building. While we had all of the measurements on the floor plan, we still had trouble with visualizing the space. The first thing we realized when we looked at the space was how much larger it was then we really imagined. Looking at a flat floor plan, we had thought for sure we would need to use two floors to accomodate everything. We quickly realized that if anything, the only problem would be filling the first floor. We made a list of anything we would need to get the space ready. The most worrying thing to myself was all of the burnt out lightbulbs. The big flood lights would for sure be expensive.

so what

While as a graphic design student, I have quickly realized that while you can imagine anything forever you really never see it properly until your holding it in your hand. The same can be said about a 3D environment like this gallery space. The exhibit would have looked completely rediculous if we never actually observed the space and just drew everything out on paper.

now what

While planning is very important, actually doing work is much more important it seems. Our lists of things we needed quickly expanded when we together surveyed the space and got our hands in things. I have found that I learn much more by doing then just observing or visualizing. We knew little about exhibit design so we couldnt do much by sketching since we really weren’t sure where to start.

11/11

what

After reviewing the press release and making sure it was completely ready to be sent out, we distributed it out to the rest of the class. I divided up the list of media outlets between myself, Johnny and Christina. I took any local TV stations and a few other radio stations. Outside of class I wrote an email with blanks to personalize it for each media outlet. While in class I sent out each email to the different outlets. I also added the event to any calender online that I could find and that Johnny or Christina hadn’t beaten me too. Earlier I had asked a former roommate who is a writer to send me any contacts in local media. He got me a good list of popular blogs and people with a decent twitter presence who I also sent some press releases too.

so what

One of the largest aspects of the winterfoods event is public relations and just getting the right people the information. If no one knows or cares about the event then no one will come or write about it after. While we have never or probably could never define what makes the event successful, I think if no one came it would be labeled pretty unsuccessful.

now what

The last week has really made me realize that connections are so important even if you think that connection would never be fruitfull. Who knows who that connection knows. It certainly helps to send your press release to a real name with a good friends name attatched instead of just whoever at the paper.

11/9

what

Johnny, Christina and I had met outside of class to start talking about the press release. Johnny gave us a good idea of what it should look like, Christina wrote most of the text for it and I compiled a list of media outlets in the Richmond area that might be interested in covering the event. So in class, Johnny and I started finalizing the press release. Mostly just going line by line and reading each other sentences to make sure nothing sounded funny. As part of the exhibit design group, we also went over some sketches for the signage. I made a template for the art pieces tags to make sure they went with the signage then distributed that file to the art group.

so what

This class period was the first where I was juggling myself between two groups. It wasn’t overwhelming but it was a new experience to begin working on two different aspects of a project at the same time. Dealing with media outlets, I realized its important to make sure its even possible that they can publish the event. With this time frame, a magazine published monthly probably wouldn’t be able to get it out in time. Though we did decide to send them the press release anyway just in case anything could happen.

now what

In the future I will make sure to always keep time frames in mind, but in this situation I really dont think it would have been possible to get the press release to some of these outlets. But it did make us realize that not everyones schedule worked with ours.

11/4

what

The exhibit design group took our trip the Gallery 5 to meet with Amanda concerning to space. We gave her a brief run down of what we planned on doing. She suggested that we try and get the veggie bus to also come to Gallery 5 for First Friday. The space gets lots of foot traffic and the veggie bus would be a very welcome addition to the street. That is currently in the works still though. The group also made a trip to two different local printers, Keith Fabry and Biz Port, to get price quotes. They ended up coming out nearly the same though as far as we can tell currently. I also tried contacting the Border for info on parking the bus in there lot but no one ever seems to be there when I try.

so what

Today was our first experience with a printer, which is probably one of the most important aspects of a print designers career. But we really aren’t doing anything that most students wouldn’t experience. We located a full color CAD printer, like what architects would print plans on. We plan to try and use this for larger signs and I don’t have any experience with a color CAD printer like this so I am interested in the results. Meeting with Amanda was a good experience with dealing with a private space and any logistics that go with it. Even just trying to get in contact with the Border owners for a quick question has proven to be a more complex aspect then I could imagine.

now what

One thing I did learn for the future from printing is definately get a quote as early as possible. It took a few days for one printer to get back to us with a quote and the other slightly longer. Same goes for setting up the event with Amanda so early. When we talked to her we learned that we got pretty lucky to be able to use the space and just slipped in. It would be booked next month and the month after.
