what

After we had tried to draw out a layout for the exhibit, Liam and I decided that we would have to go to the physical building. While we had all of the measurements on the floor plan, we still had trouble with visualizing the space. The first thing we realized when we looked at the space was how much larger it was then we really imagined. Looking at a flat floor plan, we had thought for sure we would need to use two floors to accomodate everything. We quickly realized that if anything, the only problem would be filling the first floor. We made a list of anything we would need to get the space ready. The most worrying thing to myself was all of the burnt out lightbulbs. The big flood lights would for sure be expensive.

so what

While as a graphic design student, I have quickly realized that while you can imagine anything forever you really never see it properly until your holding it in your hand. The same can be said about a 3D environment like this gallery space. The exhibit would have looked completely rediculous if we never actually observed the space and just drew everything out on paper.

now what

While planning is very important, actually doing work is much more important it seems. Our lists of things we needed quickly expanded when we together surveyed the space and got our hands in things. I have found that I learn much more by doing then just observing or visualizing. We knew little about exhibit design so we couldnt do much by sketching since we really weren’t sure where to start.
